I worked at United States Steel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

At one time great pay and benefits.

    Cons

Old fashioned good ole boy network. In the early 90's it was still pretty good but by the early 2000's went steadily down hill from there. Union a complete scam. Worked there 19 yrs and 2 months so i'm quite familiar with them. Managers are complete trash. This industry has died, don't go near this place,

    Advice to Management

Get in another line of work, you've ruined this place. It's over with.

I have been working at United States Steel full-time

    Pros

There are no pros for working here

    Cons

This is the worst place to work.. Management plays favorites. No one is running the company, not managers, supervisors, white hats. Absolutely no one. Working 16 hours four days straight. No days off. To concerned about the higher ups getting their money, that they don't want to hire anyone. The worst place to work.. I'm surprised we haven't boycotted!

I have been working at United States Steel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The insurance (while it's still provided) & guaranteed paycheck (for what it's worth).

    Cons

The Cons: there's a LONG list of them. Let's see, the company will pull your labor grade from you & force reduce you to the lowest amount of pay possible, with no questions asked or no warning whatsoever. They will take full rate maintenance personnel & place them in a labor gang at a LG1 with no incentive to make their financial books look good. There are still displaced workers from rated maintenance positions all over the place. They say its to cut costs, but yet, upper executives & management are still receiving their "huge bonuses". The hourly employees, the ones who keep the place running & producing get a quarterly profit sharing of $.01. Yes thats correcy 1 PENNY! Talk about a smack in the face. They aren't even issuing us a check for the amount owed! This company does not care about its employees. Your just a number to them. They put brothers & sisters lives on the line to get a job done. The safety is a joke to them. They preach safety in the meetings & that's where it's left. I could go on & on about the "cons" of working for this hell hole. Just read the rest of the reviews & you can form your own opinion. Growing up in the region we learned that if you got a job at this mill, you were set & it was a great place to work for. 100% complete opposite nowadays. Stay away from here if you know what's best for you & your family. YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK HERE!

    Advice to Management

Restructure the whole organization. Know that it's your hourly workers, the union ones, who work safely to get you those bonuses that you all get. Start treating your men & women as an asset to this company rather than a number. Without them, you wouldn't have a job. 90% of you don't know your butt from a hole in the ground & wouldn't know how to keep the place running. The Carnegie Way is nothing but a joke. Cost cutting for what? To put more money in your pockets? Remember, we the workforce are the ones who put our blood, sweat & tears into this whole operation, to keep it running, to keep it producing! All the while you sit back on your high horses, collecting these big bonuses, talking about "look what I did"...without us you wouldn't have jobs! There's been too many injuries, too many fatalities due to your lack of safety. It starts at the top, as managers, as the leaders to change things in the workforce for the better.

I have been working at United States Steel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits that are paid for 100% by the company thanks to our Union.

    Cons

Management is lousy. Tripping over dollars to pick up pennies. Used to have managers that worked their way through the ranks, now there are nothing but Koolaid drinking yes men that never saw a steel mill while in college.

    Advice to Management

Get your heads out of your rears and listen to your employees. You have to spend money to make money. Get rid of Mckinsey and fire Longhi.

I have been working at United States Steel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good pay and benifets

    Cons

A lack of concern for safety. Management continual changing procedures always looking for a magic answer. Totally ineffective union. Most magement (front line and mid level) seems so concerned about loosing their jobs that none of them will actually make any decisions. The buck stops nowhere.

    Advice to Management

Make decisions and stick with them long enough to see if they produce results. Have at least some concern for worker safety and moral.

    Pros

Descent pay and retirement plan "for now"

    Cons

Front line managers don't care about the employees. Safety first mentality until it effects production. Profits over people way of life!
