I worked at United States Steel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Most of the union employees are very nice and willing to help as long as your willing to learn from them.

    Cons

Layoffs, talk of safety until managers are in a hurry, unexperienced managers. Some managers are very good and some just lack experience and knowledge, and respect.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on safety at all times, talk with employees to figure out a repair, most employees have been there for years and are willing to help if asked.

I worked at United States Steel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay with good benefits. Jobs of multiple varieties and fields. Normal factory work making steel and some steel products

    Cons

The field is in distress at the current time. Lots of laid off workers. Should pick back up in near future...

    Pros

Salary is fine, people are fine, atmosphere is fine. Everything is about average for what you'd see at a large company. Not really anything special. The Southside is nice.

    Cons

Things tend to get a little boring and tedious. Legacy systems can be a nightmare. About what you'd expect technology to be like in such a large company.

I worked at United States Steel (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Typical integrated steel mill operation. USW represented and a pretty fair employer for those who are serious about their work. When work is good. Be prepared to work more hours than you may wish for. The pay will be well above average but you will miss a lot of family time and events.

    Cons

Non really. Just be prepared to be on your job when most others are off enjoying family time on weekends and holidays.

    Advice to Management

Give the employees in the plant more flexiblity to work out scheduling conflicts when possible. Get rid of that timken schedule wherever it is possible. Move to a 4 day on/ 3 day off type schedule to let your employess have a life outside the plant.

    Pros

I had very little travel. I worked closely with teams that I was auditing. I also ran the Quality program while there as well.

    Cons

The company has had a very tough time financially and was laying off auditors throughout the company. Most of the audit work was outsourced to Ernst & Young.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the advice from your audit staff. Do not disregard issues that are brought to your attention. Treat personnel with respect.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the MBAs running the business - put control back in the hands of steel people
