I worked at United Stationers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work was monotonous but ok, could get into a flow and make the time pass quicker. Some hardworking folk there, some lazy.

    Cons

Upper management was a good ol'boys club. They weren't concerned about efficiency or improvement, just meeting standards and making time to smoke cigars together outside.

High employee turnover. Hard work not rewarded.

    Advice to Management

When people offer methods of improvement that is a good thing to pay attention to.

Great People, The Culture is Growing a lot, Senior management is easily accessible, Marketing Department needs an overhaul

    Cons

They don't seem to truly appreciate talent, employees or loyalty, constant hiring freezes and layoffs, Promises are constantly broken

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the employees you have instead of lying to them about advancement opportunities repeatedly.

    Pros

It is a large stable company with opportunities if you are willing to move.

    Cons

Pay is mediocre and benefits are decent. Senior Leadership has lost focus on the front line workers and focused on shareholders

    Advice to Management

Give back to the people that do the work and you will be more in return.

I have been working at United Stationers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Getting paid every week! Getting paid every week!! Getting paid every week!!! It's an ok job. Nothing to brag about. If your're looking for something to pay the bills this is the job. Nothing more. Just keep to yourself and you'll be fine.

    Cons

Management is very unfriendly. There is no orientation when you get hired, If you have a question about policy, their response is to "refer to the employee handbook" which makes me think that they don't know the policies... There's no HR in the building. If you need to talk to HR you would need to call. My boss dropped the "F" bomb my first day. Very unprofessional. Management barking and yelling at employees. Management discussing personal issues between team members... I pray that I don't have a personal issue I need to discuss with my boss because the whole warehouse will know about it.

    Advice to Management

    YOU ALL NEED MANAGEMENT TRAINING!!!

I worked at United Stationers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are a huge plus. Good working environment. Great people.

    Cons

Cube farm. It's such a big and slow moving company, it's hard to move up "the ladder" quickly, or even get projects completed (and on your resume).

    Advice to Management

Many are there to "rest and vest." Need to look into improving the company culture forward.

I have been working at United Stationers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Relatively good pay.
Company gives back to the community

    Cons

    No work-life balance
Company doesn't care much about the welfare of employees

    Advice to Management

Management needs extensive training on human relations and a better knowledge of what needs to be done. At times, some of the managers look lost and out of place.

I have been working at United Stationers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers are nice, PTO is convenient, 401k is okay.
They are finally investing some resources internally, but at the expense of letting others go. So we're expected to do more with less which I understand, but when we start sacrificing customer service, that is a problem.

    Cons

Can't work from home, limited internal advancement. Making investments internally but not always investing in the right way.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees! The working world is changing. You need to adapt and let us be more flexible so you can retain us longer.

I worked at United Stationers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay was good for the type of work. Benefits "were" decent. Ability to work around your schedule if needed at times. Vacation time was fair. 401k

    Cons

Company has shown less and less care for workers in previous years. Freezing pensions and lowering top salary. Health benefits have changed and now cost more for less coverage.

    Advice to Management

Stop taking benefits away or making them worse. There is only so much a certain amount of people can do. If you keep cutting in departments the quality of work will go down and the injuries will go up.
