I worked at United Stationers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great salary. Great benefits. Great culture. Great co-workers. Challenging job. Challenging and wonderful customer base. Wonderful facility and great location.

    Cons

Senior management doesn’t listen to concerns. Good employees are discouraged from voicing concerns in fear of retaliation from management. HR is no help to employees who bring concerns to their attention as they do not investigate claims and allow retaliation to occur. This inactivity by HR tends to lower morale.

    Advice to Management

Be more open. Be more transparent. Be more social.

    Pros

Constant growth and expansion into new business lines through acquisition.
Business changes keep job interesting and fresh.
    Good benefits
Activities of United Foundation are fun, and offer chance to use your time, talents and treasures to support charitable causes..

    Cons

Finance under resourced for special project work that is expected to be completed in addition to regular role.
Many lateral moves in finance, but very difficult to move up to higher level role
Low margin business means that costs are tightly controlled.

    Advice to Management

Provide adequate resources to Finance area for special projects. People want to do a good job and need to make difficult choices between work and family life. Continue to invest in higher margin businesses.

A 8 hour day is not the norm more like 10 or sometimes 11 hours in a shift.

    Pros

Great people, benefits and work life balance. Opportunities to advance.

    Cons

workforce reductions about every other year hinder morale.

    Advice to Management

consider getting to know what people actually do for the company, visit the DC's more frequently.

    Pros

Great Monday through Friday schedule. It was great not working weekends ever. It was nice to "turn off the job" the moment I walked out each night. I made many great friends.

    Cons

This could be very monotonous work at times. Call center environment at its core. Not everyone in same position/title held to equal standards. Like any company, there were plenty of office politics, but this place seemed to have pockets where "who you know" was more important than how hard you worked.

    Advice to Management

Avoid cursing/vulgarity during team meetings (may not apply to all teams, just the one I was on).
