I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great coworkers, mature practices, will gain a lot of knowledge depending on your department. Opportunity to be domestically mobile within the company if you want live in subpar cities throughout the US. Great opportunity if you enjoy being paid in experience instead of money.

    Cons

Very common for loyal long term employees to be pigeon-holed. Numerous long term employees retain basic analyst titles. Negotiate your salary before joining the company, not after. Only way to get higher pay or title is by being very mobile in your career either within the facility or among other UTC locations. Loyalty and hard work will not get you a promotion. High favoritism for merit increases and promotions, management doesn't reward hard work. There are bi annual employee reviews where management pulls up each employees profile. A negative perception any one manager in the meeting will end that employees future prospects, I've seen it many times. Make sure to manage how others perceive you. If you're not on management's gold star list don't plan on going very far. They'll be happy to keep you in a role as a work horse and lie to your face to keep you happy. It's all about who you know and how others perceive you rather than what you've accomplished. Very high attrition rates. Expect to work long hours with little gratitude depending on your team.

    Advice to Management

Develop internal talent instead of looking outside the company. Pay employees more OR promote them to retain talent. Often the company does neither. I've seen countless examples of bright people leaving because UTC's cheap and management is unwilling to reward tallent.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It's a big organization that constantly fits through changes, so if you stick around long enough there is opportunity to try other things.

    Cons

Management doesn't care about their people. They micro manage your work, there is a lot of infighting between leadership, they change directions multiple times a year and they have no respect for a reasonable work life balance. The managers are just a rotten bunch of people.

    Advice to Management

Treat people with respect. Realise that other people can add value and a true leader delegates when necessary.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

UTC is a large company with global opportunity. This lends the possibility to work anywhere in the world. The management is good and there is alot of room for growth and development. Additionally, the employee scholar program is top notch with very few companies offering the level of reimbursement.

    Cons

Health insurance options are awful. If you have a family expect to pay a large amount out of pocket every year in addition to any premiums. Executives can't seem to figure out what they want and request data differently every month.

    Advice to Management

Consider the workload you are putting on your employees. When jobs aren't backfilled, the work still needs to get done which puts a greater burden on the other employees that need to pick up the slack.

I worked at United Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good compensation: salary, benefits, time off Reasonable hours

    Cons

Most locations you can work are located in the middle of nowhere or Connecticut

    Advice to Management

Most of my managers were pretty reasonable. I really can't think of any advice off of the top of my head.

    StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Financial Analyst in Hartford, CT

I worked at United Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Interesting products, great people, strong leadership throughout the company, good corporate vision, good location, competitive salary, good fringe benefits

    Cons

United Technologies is at the whim of the state of business with the US government and is very sensitive to the aerospace industry. Restructuring is constant.

    Advice to Management

Work to insulate UTC from downturns.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Standard work across the company makes your job really easy

    Cons

No job security at all, corporate headquarters send numbers of employees to be cut every quarter, even if you are doing a great job and your absence will hurt the company your boss has no other choices than let you go just because headquarters told wall street that they will restructure
