I worked at United Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Easy to shine given all the incompetence at various levels of the disorganization. Decent benefits including health, dental, vision. Flexibility to move around to different business units

    Cons

Low pay given the workload. There’s tremendous incompetence everywhere, especially in the retained IT staff. I’m enjoying how they’re slapping the word “Digital” on all the dinosaurs still working there.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees

I have been working at United Technologies

    Pros

Large company with many business units to work with/for. Great mission depending on which business you work for. Tons of opportunity for movement within the company. Excellent benefits package with an employee education program (tuition reimbursement) that's second to none. Lots of work to do.

    Cons

UTC is a huge, multi-national organization that sometimes feels like a mom-and-pop shop. Corporate often has expectations of the business units that are ignored or significant push-back is applied ("we've ALWAYS done it this way, why do you want to change now?"). LOTS of work to do. Annual bonuses only apply to the Senior Management/Executive Level.

    Advice to Management

Tighten up adherence to policy (I know, you're already doing this, but individual BU leadership needs to take it more seriously). Hold management accountable, but also hold external contractors accountable when they don't deliver. Having the same company service your overall IT needs for 16+ years does not lend itself to efficient or effective operations. Make them re-bid periodically (every 3-5 years) to keep... them honest and find savings for the company.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits package. After a year of employment you are eligible to participate in the employee scholar program which covers 100% of education costs for many degree programs.

    Cons

Rampant office politics. Limited career advancement opportunities between business units.

    Advice to Management

Support a career track for your employees who have earned their advanced degrees through the scholar program. You are hemorrhaging valuable talent by not investing in their further advancement within the company.

I worked at United Technologies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

When the system works, it works well. Good opportunity to learn and use new skills.

    Cons

Management can be ignorant of reality in the business units; they hear what they want to hear.

    Advice to Management

Your focus on making the quarter is too late. Make the day, and the week takes care of itself. When the weeks are all taking care of themselves, the quarters are automatic. Pushing at the end of the quarter simply steals from the following weeks and quarter.

I worked at United Technologies for less than a year

    Pros

UTC is a great company for people who love working with varied technologies, and excellent senior managers willing to mentor make the company a great place to start out a career.

    Cons

This is a very large company that moves slowly. UTC is becoming much better at sharing technologies across the business units but it is still missing some key opportunities to grow and innovate. This will change in the next few years.

    Advice to Management

Continue to promote innovation as a method of growing the top line

I have been working at United Technologies

    Pros

Great ability to define strategy and use of ACE. Communication from the top via meetings and webinars are good. Visual Controls guide the business units/departments.

    Cons

Lack ability to execute to the plan due to high employee turnover. Leadership style is too political, disregards experienced advice, which threatens ability to work as a team. Leadership culture does not foster respect for legacy employees (Goodrich) and is not a united front of effort.

    Advice to Management

Learn to build and trust your teams. Have respect for all persons and they will accomplish amazing work. Flatten organization, less centeralize management. Top down control is too slow for a global economy and ability to respond to customers.

I worked at United Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Extremely generous education benefits after 1 year Big company budgets for projects (when approved) Worldwide footprint

    Cons

Very behind current or even last-generation workplace technologies. Upgrades take forever and technology policy is one-size-fits-all. The upper management obsession with the "ACE" Quality system is frequently misused/misapplied, and can make even senior jobs monotonous and devoid of fulfillment. You will frequently be expected to fit in an unreasonable amount of quality overhead work without regard to or balance... with your business priorities. Restructuring, combination, and shuffling of even the largest business units is endless; your priorities will be completely replace every 6-18 months. Be careful... the division you're hired into and the job you're hired for might look very different in a year.

    Advice to Management

Better prioritize the role of the "ACE" Quality system/efforts, so that employees are not forced to treat it as 'extra work' on top of their other obligations. Truly figure out what the company should look like, instead of shuffling executives and combining/breaking businesses apart, and hoping it works without a cohesive strategy. The general policy of paying below-market salaries is hurting your ability to... retain upcoming talent and make the right hire the first time.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    The tuition policy is phenominal.

    Cons

Pay is weak, bonuses weaker. Business units have to deal with 5 levels of manangement and a host of analysts who are just trying to justify their jobs with busy work. Constant change, borderline unreasonable expectations and deadlines.

    Advice to Management

Streamline reporting so all management uses the same reports in the same format. Follow ACE like the rest of us. Practice, don;t just preach.
