As a non-profit organization with a low cost per dollar raised, resources are limited. Budgets are tight. Salaries are not competitive with the for profit sector.

Working at United Way you have to care about the job! NOT the money. Obviously it's non profit so you can't expect a amazing salary. But they are fair.

The feeling of helping others compared to working for a public sector organization is very rewarding. There benefits are fantastic.
Cons
You start to realize that there is a major focus on making money as a 'non-profit' but it seems as though this is mostly so that the senior staff can make their huge salaries. My position did not pay nearly enough as it should've, even for today's economy.
