I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Getting to work from home, vacation time, and 401K match.

    Cons

Raises are minimal, and the starting pay is not even enough if you are a single parent. Trying to get promoted is almost impossible no matter how great you are. They always want a degree for something, and don't really look at all the experience someone has within the organization.

    Advice to Management

Take a risk once and awhile on someone that is looking to grow with the company into a better position. The person may not have a degree, but might have the proper knowledge to actually do the job.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is using innovative, current technologies. They have locations across the country, and in my experience, although it's a highly matrixed organization, I felt part of a smaller team that was motivated to succeed. They are highly focused on core values and culture, which is a good thing.

    Cons

Management inconsistently applies policies for their convenience. They've got policies for every little thing, but don't always consistently apply them, making exceptions without equity. Policies can be used more as a hammer than as an aid.

    Advice to Management

Make accommodation for telecommuting in the IT team, especially when family needs dictate it.

    Pros

Decent salary, tuition reimbursement, 401K, telecommute option

    Cons

Big brother always watching every move on the computer. Too much emphasis on how many times mouse is clicked or keys are pressed rather than on quality and quantity of work.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees like humans rather than robots.

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some managers allow WFH (not all however)

    Cons

IT group is so convoluted it's difficult to get anything accomplished, We spend 9-10 hours a day jumping from one priority to the next, we are in constant re-active mode, no time for pro-active steps. Recent org changes has put even more workload on most PM's. Very little time for learning curve.

Because we're in constant high-priority mode, it is very difficult to take any time off. I continue to lose PTO days each year.

    Advice to Management

Don't restrict position backfills to only interns and offshore resources.

    Pros

Many opportunities to gain experience and work from home. The company invests a lot of money in technology. There's always something new to learn

    Cons

The enterprise doesn't care how much work employees have, they will keep adding projects and expect all deadlines to be met. Management feels the same but can't do anything about the workload

    Advice to Management

Show more respect for your employees work-life balance
