      Pros

Incredible culture, amazing talent, and inspiring work environment.

      Cons

Not worth sharing now that they are closing. They did the best they could and I'm grateful for my time with the company.

      Advice to Management

I worked at Universal Mind full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Really stellar flexibility. One of the things UM gets right is a large emphasis on work-life balance. Moderately big-name clients/projects.

        Cons

Horrendous communication between execs and infantry, as well as inter-team communication. Folks get fired in sweeping cuts and random intervals with little-to-no explanation, leaving regular employees to live in fear of closed door meetings and shadow movements by management. Mid-level leadership can sometimes pressure junior employees into roles that don't fit their background or career goals.

        Advice to Management

Look, at some point, UM had some of the best company culture and potential you could ask for. But you lost sight of that and if you don't care about and respect your employees, you will continue to fail.

I have been working at Universal Mind full-time

        Pros

Universal Mind is in a steady state of evolution. They aren't afraid to try something new and see if it works and I really appreciate that about them. There's a ton of flexibility, but the expectations are also high. The people are great to work with and there's a sense of community/family even though most of us work remotely.

        Cons

With constant change it can sometimes be difficult to know what's next. Sometimes this creates a bit of anxiety for the folks in the trenches.

I have been working at Universal Mind full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Autonomy. Respect. Flexibility. Work/life balance. Opportunities abound for professional growth. I started at UM as contractor and moved to FTE after roughly 2 years. What I have found here is an incredibly empowering and engaging place to work IF you're willing to grab your own professional growth by the balls. The people here are continually raising the bar for their colleagues and that's what makes this an exciting...

        Cons

For anyone who says there is no career advancement here, I will say "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take." It's up to YOU to make it clear what you would like your career path to look like, and then you need to be proactive and make that happen by going above and beyond what is being asked of you and by actually articulating what you would like to do. Working remotely requires self-motivated individuals who...

        Advice to Management

More diversity is needed. It would be nice to see more racial diversity among the employees along with more racial AND gender diversity on the leadership team. Other than that, thank you for crafting an amazing company. I can only imagine how challenging it must be to protect the unique and rewarding culture that is Universal Mind, but we all appreciate everything that you do to make that happen.

I worked at Universal Mind for more than a year

        Pros

As a contractor, the rate was good. A lot of the people I personally worked with were excellent. Strong developers, easy to work with. I have stayed friends with many of the team members I worked with. The projects look great on your portfolio. Remote work.

        Cons

There's a significant amount of nepotism. Additionally, as a contractor, expect to get the crap work. Work developed by senior full-timers, architected the way they wanted it, then abandoned because they got bored and wanted to move on. This means you'll likely be working on over-engineered legacy projects that nobody else is willing to take on. It makes for an excellent paycheck if you can do that daily grind. ...

I have been working at Universal Mind full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Leadership: Universal Mind's leadership is very strong. They care about their employees and are working hard to make a company that people can work at for their entire career. They have a strong vision for the future of the company, but aren't afraid to pivot as the market changes. Consulting services of any kind is a tough business to be in as you're subject to the whims of the entire market, client's needs change and...

        Cons

Clients. Agency work is tough. Regardless of how good a company Universal Mind is, at the end of the day most employee's experience will be determined more by the client they are working for. No matter how good your sales or account team are, there will always be difficult, boring, frustrating, etc. clients. Hopefully there are great ones too, but depending on which clients you get your experience here can be very different....

I have been working at Universal Mind

        Pros

I'm a 20 something software developer contracting on behalf of UM. I gotta say, the UM bunch is one of the chillest yet hardest working groups I have ever been a part of. The typical UM'er is extremely intelligent, creative, edgy, and professional. I've seen UM contractors accomplish huge technological feats in very short amounts of time. I've kicked back and enjoyed myself while drinking beer that UM has paid for. Even...

This isn't necessarily specific to just UM but managing the different timezones between all the UM'ers around the country can get a bit wonky.
