Depending on the research group: -excellent research -flexibility and freedom -doing what you always wanted to do

Cons

-salary is low -temporary contracts -academic culture is toxic nowadays with the push to publish as many paper as possible -job prospects are low

A lot of freedom (depending on the departement), very interesting research, nice colleagues

Cons

Administration often unhelpful or downright hostile, difficult to change things that do not directly concern research, trying to improve teaching is often not rewarded, management seems not to be interested in their employees.
