    Pros

For a postdoc the pay is quite good. It's an international atmosphere and many of the labs are top notch. There is money and the equipment is usually well-maintained.

    Cons

If you don't know German you will feel isolated in the community. Labs tend to be a bit isolated and there doesn't seem to be too much interaction between labs even within the same building.

    Advice to Management

Of course each professor has a different style so it will entirely depend on which lab you join as to how you evaluate your experience. In our department I felt the senior management had difficulty dealing with conflict and with communicating changes that were going to be made. They especially had a hard time hiring new professors.

I have been working at Universität Zürich part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Professors have high ambitions for their students. The availability of data is great. The university is centrally located. Zurich is very nice city to be.

    Cons

Salary is low. Only yearly contracts, Lots of pressure or no intrest at all by supervisor. Students either alone and isolated or permanently stressed by supervisor. To much teaching and admin tasks. Rough tone.

    Advice to Management

Do not let PhDs alone in the chairs. The chairs need to no that they cannot treat PhD students that bad.

I have been working at Universität Zürich full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Located in one of the most livable cities in Europe. Decent range of facilities and services

    Cons

Isolated work environment, not much exchange with other life scientists. Bureaucratic and hierarchical structures! Lack of enthusiasm and can-do-attitude. Depending on boss mentor ship can equal zero!

    Advice to Management

Install some sort of quality control of PIs. How well do they supervise their PhD students. Make yearly 'Mitarbeitergespräch' a must!
