I have been working at University College Cork part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, a chance to train, opportunities to progress and respectful enviroment

    Cons

On the bureaucratic side of things at times. But not that often. But considering it is an old traditional university it is less so than I would say other universities of its ilk are

    Advice to Management

    Increase permanent contracts

I have been working at University College Cork (Less than a year)

    Pros

Currently, I am dealing with two issues (1) Design and development of ultra short pulses with high repetition frequency laser source using quantum nano-structures based semiconductor lasers, (2) Coherent manipulation and control of light through Bio-photonic structures in order to understand bio-imaging.

    Cons

I have done some significant work in biophotonics last couple of years. I am keenly interested to continue my research in biophotonics particularly for developing the optical imaging techniques.

    Advice to Management

    teaching and Research

    Pros

Convenient working hours - flexible and easy to maintain a work life balance around same. Good working facilities and beautiful campus.

    Cons

Perhaps could be viewed as a somewhat beaurocratic environment where performance reviews are rigorously in place across departments - but alas, such is the nature of most educational institutions.

I have been working at University College Cork full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere, entirely dependent on research group, however. The work-life balance is excellent, and there are opportunities to further your career either in academia or industry.

    Cons

Like a lot of big colleges and universities, UCC has problems with bureaucracy and, at times, intstitutionalised public sector workers.

    Advice to Management

It would be great to get a better handle on the sometimes ridiculous layers of bureaucracy and a small number of entrenched and unhelpful staff who have no reason to work hard (or, in rare cases, at all).
