I have been working at University College London full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

UCL is classifies as being one of the top 10 universities in the World. Diverse working environment. As a result it is possible to work on a range of different IT and related projects and initiatives. Additionally it is possible to work in different departments across the UCL campus.

    Cons

Teams, particularly working on IT can be very silo'ed. As a result there is a lot of work that is unnecessarily repeated and very big gaps between projects exist. For example very little technical material has been recorded to date so operations are dependent on specific individuals memories.

    Advice to Management

Remove the silo model and get teams to work together. Remember that the new services are still dependant/running on legacy systems. it is essential to formalise/consolidate processes to enable a more holistic, reliable service to be provided.

I worked at University College London as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Great working hours
    -Flexible
    -Great work life balance
    -Great holidays

    Cons

    - Bureaucracy
    - I had no budget and no targets
    - Very independent work so much so that I actually was not sure what my role was
    - Not a particularly friendly atmosphere

As the university is so large I would hope my experience would not be the same for other departments

I have been working at University College London full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, flexible working, ethos and values, courses and training for staff, diverse inspiring work force

    Cons

Poor management and lots of political decision making not based on facts or improving operations or structures. Policies and values look nice but not true in practice. Your experience depends on your manager and department.
Lack of space and poor IT systems supporting staff and students.

    Advice to Management

    Improve systems and address structures.
Improve HR and improve standard of management.

    Pros

Respected big university. Will look great on your CV, dependent on your research achievements. World leading scientists and friendly relaxed environment.

    Cons

Overcrowded facilities. HR, pension team and other admin stuff are not responsive and also not very supportive, instead of helping you out with issues they create issues.

I have been working at University College London full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

World-renowned institution, agglomeration of world class researchers, highly diversified and exciting research activities and opportunities.

Name of the institution helps to get work accepted at conferences etc.

    Cons

Institution is too big and unorganised, i.e. organisational structures and inter-dependencies are not clear. There is a lack of "communal spirit" of being part of one institution. This is mainly due to a huge gap between administration i.e. staff on fixed contracts and researchers on grant-dependent contracts. Communication is difficult. Even when funds are available, things move forward very slowly and sometimes not at all due to internal issues.

In terms of infrastructure, there is no space at all (!), proper offices are basically non-existent, even for senior research staff. IT infrastructure is a mess compared to other universities.

    Advice to Management

Strengthen departmental cohesion by assigning more responsibilities to administrative staff within the department, rather than having everyone scattered across the entire city. If one does not know and never sees the person, one does not care about forms being filled or things being moved forward.
