I worked at University Settlement full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good health insurance with low copays. 19 days of vacation. Unionized position so long as not in management. Learned a lot about social service and various resources for the LES community. Good work life balance, if you work late then you can come in later the next day or take the hours back.

    Cons

High turnover in management and front line staff. Coworkers not as motivated. Management focuses on numbers rather than quality.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the needs of families served. Advocate to pay front line staff higher wages which will help decrease turnover. Communicate with staff in more encouraging tones rather than punitive.

I have been working at University Settlement full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You still have some good staff left

    Cons

Upper management are heartless and inconsiderate, their only priority is their personal agenda. Making changes without warning and disrespectful behavior towards staff and families. No longer getting children registered due to bad reputation. Last year the program was on the news due to negligence of management for not informing parents of pervasive contagious conditions in the classroom. The good staff are leaving... in big numbers. Teachers leaving and new staff that are not trained or familiar with culture of the neighborhood.

    Advice to Management

Program is suffering due upper management questionable agendas and practices. Needs better upper management to save the program.

I worked at University Settlement full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good co-workers. Very patient to teach you what you need to know.

    Cons

I saw that some equipment was in bad square. I assume there is a lack of funding. I hope they get more resources.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the upbeat attitude.

I have been working at University Settlement full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

some of the staff are caring.

    Cons

New management are not professionals, treating staff very poorly, extremely stressful environment, lots of staff leaving and/or looking to get out. Many complaints from parents that are not been heard by upper management. The good caring staff are leaving and being replaced by staff not reflecting of the neighborhood, very sad, this program used to be a great place for families and children but no longer the... case. Program out of compliance because they can fill out classrooms as before because parents are leaving and going to better managed day care sites.

    Advice to Management

If you can't listen to the families that make your program is time to leave and let someone else do a better job. You destroying the program.

I have been working at University Settlement full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Organization doing some very important work. Some extremely hardworking people who take on a million jobs at once.

    Cons

    - Very high turnover in Development Department - Strategically rudderless management that provides little professional development. - Sense of always rushing. Everything is the most important! - Little understanding of how marketing should feed into revenue. - Very political environment. - Expectation that you take on every job (it's a nonprofit - and that's part of environment - but US/The Door/BSA makes CYA... tasks a priority)
