I have been working at University System of Maryland full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working in a research consortium (START) at the university, there are always the perks have having interesting work, talented colleagues, and the opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Outstanding benefits in terms of vacation days.

    Cons

Salary is uncompetitive compared to private sector. Paths for promotion through the PTK plan may alleviate this, however, like any bureaucracy it takes a few years to do anything. Administration may make the consortium and institution financially unsustainable.

I worked at University System of Maryland full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

What i enjoyed most while working in the Graduate Admissions office was having the opportunity to interact, learn and gain some insight about the diverse cultures of the world. It was amazing.

    Cons

Some of the challenges were a bit redundant, i.e., having to interact with very opinionated people or working with people who exhibit unethical business practices, which I had no problems addressing when necessary.
Overall, I enjoyed my professional/working environment.

    Advice to Management

Try to understand that respect, at all times, is a required ethical business practice, no exceptions.

I worked at University System of Maryland full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are unparalelled. they cared about your growth. Just because they wanted you to work for them for an indefinite period of time, didn't mean that you were to be left without educational/growth experiences.

    Cons

Some suoervisors are illequipped for their position. They use the professional field that is the University to cover up their personal distate for those under them within their department.
Also entry level positions should be paid more. Merit-based raises must return.

    Advice to Management

    See above con statement.

I worked at University System of Maryland (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely professional and you work with people who are truly dedicated to helping the state and its citizens attain an affordable/quality education. Coworkers are great, this is a phenomenal place to start and end a career. Its a corporate office so very different than being on a college campus.

    Cons

The pay could be a bit better but, USMD has no say as to whether or not we can get raises. Its up to the State Govt and Governor so, if there are no funds from the state, there are no raises.
