I have been working at University of Akron full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The new president isn't the spawn of Satan. Wilson seems to care about students and wants to engage with him, in contrast with his predecessor who wouldn't even speak with students and who was hired to be a hatchet man. There are still some staff who genuinely care about the students, and continue to do a great job even with little appreciation and no financial incentive.

    Cons

Unequal salaries, nepotism and morale continue to be a problem . They have supposedly instituted a freeze on raises - unless you have the right friends. In that case you will be getting a huge raise even though most departments can't afford to buy office supplies. Nobody wants to talk about it, and the administration is hiding it under all their back-clapping and self-congratulations over hiring a president who isn't a tool, but the university is still in dire financial straits and I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't more layoffs.

Powerful people continue to promote their unqualified friends, demoralizing those who are working hard and yet haven't seen an increase or promotion in years. Jobs are filled by someone's buddy without ever being posted so other qualified individuals at least have a chance to apply.

    Advice to Management

Institute pay grades based on longevity and responsibility. Provide non-financial incentives to raise employee morale, and show appreciation to the people on the front lines who interact the most with students. These are your life line, because they determine whether your students feel welcomed and heard. Mistreat these people (as you have been) and you create an environment of discontent. Before long that gets communicated with the students, and they head down the road to Kent or Stark.
