I worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefit package, especially 5% match for TIAA 403b and medical insurance and other employee perks.
President and senior leaders try to improve the university infrastructure and the university is continuously growing especially in medical area.

    Cons

Science is not competitive enough to other top universities compared to its size and diverisity.
Sometimes, politics influences the focus in university development, but looks going the right direction.

    Advice to Management

Too much medical area is focused, but need to balance with other science areas such as chemistry, physics and biology.

I worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked at UAB as a student. There are a million departments with a million research assistants, so there's probably more than a little variance, but I enjoyed it.

My boss was very understanding of the plight of a student, giving lessened workloads around exam times. I worked on interesting projects and it was a relaxed environment.

    Cons

UAB is a huge bureaucracy. It's absolutely massive. If you need a form filled out from someone high up, it could take literal weeks to work its way through.

I have been working at University of Alabama at Birmingham part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working at UAB's student center was wonderful. They worked with my class schedule and you truly cannot beat an on-campus job when you live in the dorms! There's nothing like being able to walk to and from work and have even more disposable income due to not having to spend as much money on gas. In my downtime I was even able to complete homework assignments, ensuring that I could balance work with keeping up my grades!

    Cons

The downside to having an on-campus job is that the base pay is minimum wage; i.e., $7.25 an hour. We were told that we would receive raises at numerous times throughout the year which are yet to materialize. However, for a part-time student job I can't complain too much; overall, the job is one that would take a lot for me to trade while a student.
