I worked at University of Bristol part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I worked on 2nd year teaching labs for two years and I found it to be a great way to get hands-on teaching experience as a PhD student and not interrupt my research flow. The teaching staff running the labs were always helpful and would keep you informed about issues for the days experiment (acting up instrumentation or common student error for example). Its a great job to work if you need some additional funding while...

    Cons

The primary con to this position was when one would say they couldn't work certain shift months in advance ( I travelled to US family for Christmas in early December so missed two shifts), they completely ignore it and tell you to sort it out with other postgraduate demonstrators to cover the shift. I understand their side of the issue is that the course will go on, but some flexibility must be made for international...

    Advice to Management

I think a bit more organisation and more ways to contact fellow demonstrators would be helpful for running the course overall.

I have been working at University of Bristol full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A supportive and encouraging research environment. People are open to interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Cons

There is little job security for postdoc, while this is not the problem for this Univ. but the problem for the whole academia.

"Intensely bureaucratic university which stifles creativity and blames its staff for its inefficiencies"

I worked at University of Bristol full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great staff members on the academic side. A nice campus in a beautiful city. I have to write 20 words minimum here, but I've run out of nice things to say.

    Cons

I've worked at many universities and this is by far the worst experience I've had. The bureaucracy is labyrinthine and brutally inefficient. While your colleagues might be nice, the decision-makers and administrators have zero interest in the human realities of the job and want to micromanage your every move. The administrators and managers have truly mastered the art of buck-passing while constantly making you feel...

    Advice to Management

You've forgotten what universities are about. They're places dedicated to the excitement and joy of learning and sharing knowledge. They are not businesses obsessed only with their bottom line. You treat your staff like inconvenient items on a spreadsheet. Nobody is given empowered responsibility to make reasonable, humane decisions. Instead, there's always someone else to whom the buck can be passed. And yet you demand...

I have been working at University of Bristol full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

If you have a good boss and a smoothly going project, you will have a very flexible working life. Normally there are chances to attend one international conference and one national conference per year, and you can always extend your travel with your annual holiday.

        Cons

The quality of your research life or even personal life while working in academia really depends a lot on your boss's working style (or even personality). Bristol is a big university with a lot of rules/guidance/procedures, which means that all the training/risk assessment always take lone time (normally one month) when you are a fresher.

        Advice to Management

The processing procedures for documents/training really need to speed up. And lab management can always be improved to achieve more efficient working environment.
