I have been working at University of Bristol full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible hours, good work ethics, good career development opportunities, good support when applying for grants, good culture and interaction with other academics

    Cons

Complex system for career progression, not very good benefits, almost useless superannuation scheme, no support for childcare

    Advice to Management

Improve benefits package, for example, low cost nursery for employees with family.

I have been working at University of Bristol full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good community, generous pay scales and pensions. It's a really good place to work. Most of the department offices are in nice locations around the city.

    Cons

Limited career progression in technical roles, as some job descriptions can be very specific and therefore limiting. No bonus contributions as effectively public sector.

I have been working at University of Bristol

    Pros

Pay was in line with other unis. Positive working environment usually but not always. Usual benefits from working at a university such as flexible hours. Amazing city!

    Cons

Leadership suffered from the pitfalls that almost all unis do - scientists are not managers! Often treated poorly by senior staff who have a very hierarchal view of the institution. Certain aspects of the university were an absolute shambles usually down to poor communication, organisation and attitude. Again, as is normal for university research positions, the scope for career progression...

    Advice to Management

If you are in a position where you have manage more than one or two people seek out management help - so much time, money and effort is wasted due to mismanagement
