    Pros

    UCB Campus & Medical Benefits

    Cons

Antiquated HR/Payroll technology, Perception of HR Supervisors that UCB is 'above law', Culture of Intimidation and Fear and Ethical Managers transferring to other UC campuses.
Note: Ratings/comments for CSS HR only.

    Advice to Management

Conduct routine and confidential retention interviews of all CSS staff, instead of sporadic exit interviews.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -decent pay
-flexibility of lunch schedule (even though most people eat at their desks)
    -great location

    Cons

    -poor upper management
    -very cliquey
-older crowd/ not good for a college grad looking for experience
    -sabotage of younger women

    Advice to Management

I talked to management numerous times. They didn't help with a single issue in the office. None to give, there's just too much.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for a top rated university will look good on your next resume.

    Cons

1 When a former president of the university was being investigated for ethics violation, his "punishment" was to issue an email to 500 randomly selected employees that said we had 72 hours to complete an online course in ethics or we would be fired. So because of his dealings we had to waste time on a class we did not get paid for.
2 When an employee was discovered to have stolen millions of dollars she was not prosecuted because "it would look bad with the donors."
3 When an entire department brought grievences against their manager the human relations department spent months on mediations. Final outcome was to side with the manager and tel the employees that they had wasted the university's time with complaining.
I could go on and on. Bottom line is the university is run as an elite operation. If you're an elite it's a good place to work. If you are a lower level worker you better hope the elite you are working for is a good guy.

    Advice to Management

Follow the rules instead of just following procedures that are in your interests.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with some of the brightest minds around, doing cutting edge research, and being a part of something greater than corporate America can bring you.

    Cons

Consistently bad employee relations, with outright lying to staff, lowballing salaries, cutting positions, and taking away benefits while heaping more and more work onto remaining staff with no salary adjustment.

    Advice to Management

Stop taking raises while the staff is going through layoffs.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The University culture and benefits are great. The location is wonderful. Good for families and stability. There are many ways to plug in.

    Cons

Little opportunity for growth. There are cuts being made in IT staffing, when the rest of the Bay Area continues to grow and expand in this sector.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people! Training, community building, career paths.

    Pros

Came here for the big name! It sounds fancy when you tell someone you work for UC Berkeley.

    Cons

Disappointed with the very archaic mind set of the management and administration. Lots of people here that are past their expiration date. Lots of politics, lots of unprofessional behavior that is widely accepted and never corrected.

    Advice to Management

This world renowned institutional is only on the academic side. The administrative side of this institution need some major shakedown and revamping. Lots of people in management that do not have the skills and qualifications to be in the positions they have been put in and is NOT based on merit. I see many people in high ranking positions based on seniority or just inheritance because the boss retired. New staff and talent is often seen as a threat and growth is stifled. Lots of politics within the units and lots of people around to stab you in the back. Talented and qualified people are hired but are restrained and not allowed to grow. Poor work environment and culture.
