I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of opportunities for advancement on campus. Much of it is dependent on your immediate supervisor, and whether he/she supports upward mobility and ambition. The benefits are amazing and there are many extremely smart people, including staff, faculty, and students. There is a reason it is the best university in the world.

    Cons

Many staff members are entrenched in the way they have done things for 25 years and are not open to new methods or technologies. These days we have better communication methods better than faxing! It is a huge bureaucracy and things move very slowly. You have to negotiate the best salary you can when you are hired because raises are nearly non-existent. Some years it is a 2% increase, sometimes none.

    Advice to Management

Allow your staff to grow and advance. It will only help the University!
