    Pros

Good reputation, especially for graduate school. Excellent and helpful staff and faculties. Good atmosphere, nice campus, lots of resources, etc. Berkeley is a very very nice town, close to San Francisco - one of the best cities in the world, close to the sea, close to mountains... weather is always nice... many good restaurants around... basically, you can find everything you want here. The university itself has lots of diversity. It is fun to get to know people from other countries, get to know other cultures..

    Cons

Pay is lower than private universities, but is enough, at least for graduate students... hard to find parking space, even after you pay a lot, there is no guarantee that you can have a space every morning...

    Advice to Management

Attract more good faculties, more collaboration with industries

    Pros

It is a research position. I work on the topic that I am interested in. There are a lot of smart people around, and I have a lot of collaboration with them. Relation with large companies is great and there are frequent visits of industry fellows. Advisor is also very nice. The location is great because the campus is at the heart of Berkeley, a very popular place in the bay area. There are several public parks around as well as beaches.

    Cons

    There is none so far.

    Advice to Management

Hire more smart people to do research.

    Pros

You can be truly proud of the place you work. You get immediate respect when people learn where you work. The social and political setting of the Berkeley area are amazing. You will never feel that history is passing you by -- you will feel that people around you are or will be making history.

    Cons

It is a large university, so it might be hard to get personalized attention form the administration when you need it. The fact that it is part of an even larger beurocracy -- the University of California -- makes it even harder.

    Advice to Management

Berkeley Postdoctoral Organization is great, and Berkeley is, indeed, doing more for its postdocs than many other universities.Fro that I am grateful. However, there is still much to be done to improve the life of postdocs on campus. One small thing would be to oblige all campus organizations that use checkboxes on their application/payment/etc forms to include postdoctoral researchers into the list that often includes only undegraduates, graduates, faculty, and stuff, leaving postdocs feel confused and unwelcome.

    Pros

It's Berkeley! It's a vibrant, lively, engaging, fun and organic school. Berkeley is home to some of the best students and researchers in the world.

    Cons

Working while studying is not for everyone. For example, if you have a semester full of classes, adding work hours to your week makes everything overbooked.

    Advice to Management

Not much. Since the economy took a dive in 2008, California's near bankruptcy affects UC Berkeley's budgets -- but there are many university members discussing the issues, and that's a good thing.

    Pros

    varied, high-quality research
laid-back environment compared to East Coast research universities
    fun, interesting people
    nice location and campus
    very high campus pride
    excellent library system

    Cons

    UC schools face funding cuts
finding affordable, safe housing can be difficult
I felt that my department (bioengineering) put a premium on new topics in the graduate coursework, which required sacrificing some fundamentals.

    Advice to Management

I was generally very satisfied with my time at UC Berkeley. I thought the university did a good job of keeping connections with industry. In bioengineering, UCB should work to clarify its academic partnerships (such as with UCSF).

    Pros

UC Berkeley's reputation is among the best benefits of conducting research at Cal. Depending on the specific research group, the work can be incredibly satisfying as well

    Cons

Working as a researcher at Berkeley often involved dealing with rather large egos, as most everyone was at the top of their field.

    Advice to Management

The leadership within the laboratories tended to be out of grasp with the effort and time requested by the staff, and did not typically respect the non-research related demands on the researchers.

    Pros

If you're into the standard stuff, UCB has good benefits and a decent pension plan (that is also sinking the system). However, I also enjoyed all the other benefits that go along with working on a college campus. You get to interact with intelligent students, see great research, work with amazing faculty members and feel great about working to improve a top notch university.

    Cons

If you're doing anything administrative, there's a ton of paperwork to fill out. For a technical person this can be incredibly aggravating. Getting things done around the university can be a problem. There's never enough money going around so you're really not gonna be paid all that well.

    Advice to Management

UC Berkeley's management is in a tough spot. Keeping your employees happy for the next few years will be a real chore. While faculty always come first, keep the perks for those who support the faculty and keep the university running.

    Pros

I think the best thing about working at the Student Affairs Development Office was that it was very relaxed in comparison to a lot of other offices.

    Cons

Honestly, I can't think of anything bad to say about this office or the group of people there. They are all wonderful and I wish all offices could be like them. They love each other.

    Advice to Management

I think they've done a great job overall. Sometimes, it gets a little crazy with deadlines, but really who doesn't?
