I worked at University of California Berkeley (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Surrounded by lots of smart people, can be intellectually stimulating if you network with the right colleagues, opportunity to contribute to positive mission, prestigious university, overall all positive friendly culture

    Cons

Bureaucratic and slow; can be cliquish; considerable gap between newer forward thinking staff and long established staff regarding their ability to promote new ideas and adjusting to change (i.e. people who mainly hang in there to get their pension); weak internal talent development

    Advice to Management

Track performance of people in higher leadership positions through 360 review etc. There are considerable pockets of established people/leaders who talk a good talk but haven't produced the results to back it up.

    Pros

As a Classroom Management Lead, shifts were long but not tedious or difficult, and pay was great. A very nice environment.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time

    Pros

I learned a lot about unions.

    Cons

Low pay. Aggressive communication style of my boss and directors. No accountability for anyone who was above manager level in the way they did or did not complete their task and how they treated underlings.

    Advice to Management

I worked for a Research Center at the University that basically operated as it's own nonprofit - but without any fiscal oversight. Create a system for regulating centers and make sure they are standing up to the UCB name.
