I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pros of being a part of the Residential and Student Service Programs at UC Berkeley are probably about the same as at any university: you work with a diverse group of people bound together by their desire to make other people's college experience better, and free housing.

The actual people you work with on a daily basis are what makes this job engaging, fulfilling, and fun. You will likely forge lasting friendships with both co-workers and residents.

    Cons

In a word? Bureaucracy. Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) is a mess. People are constantly leaving and getting hired (every Resident Director and Assistant Director in my building complex left the university within three months), and every year upper management changes the goals and requirements for RAs, leading to a set of perpetually shifting hoops that even senior Resident Assistants sometimes struggle to jump through.

Some Resident Directors may go to bat for you and try to tailor the upper management's program to what you and your co-workers have found works for your building. Others may add extra hoops. And you have little control over any of it.

    Advice to Management

Be more open with your student employees, and work on the consistency of your programming.

I worked at University of California Berkeley part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Compensation of Room and Board, sometimes close to campus, professional development, and increased knowledge of campus resources

    Cons

RSSP really does not care about it's RA's, laundry is very expensive, late night work, RSSP lacks on professionalism when it comes to RA safety.
