I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

High standard of research; open, smart people; many opportunities to collaborate; a lot of support for career planning

    Cons

J1 visa is the only visa option for international postdocs. This is an exchange visa, therefore, it is not necessarily suitable for everyone.

    Cons

Fast tempo , people are less patient- not necessarily good for someone heading to the academia.

    Pros

Strong research program, good facilities, good name recognition

    Cons

I worked at University of California Berkeley (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Diverse staff, campus perks, great location.

    Cons

Campus reorganization lost many jobs. Favoritism and nepotism run rampant. Many job postings are already filled by insiders but have to be posted by law.

    Advice to Management

Promote and hire based on ability. Also hire more older workers with experience. Stop being threatened someone will take your job!

I have been working at University of California Berkeley as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Students are great.
-You have a lot of autonomy in teaching.

    Cons

-The university seems to be cutting costs in ways that impact the day-to-day of teaching.

    Advice to Management

You can't possibly be saving that much money by buying low quality chalk and printing materials.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Professional development is superb for technical staff; benefits are good but not the best as compared to other Bay Area employers. Chances and opportunities to work with many different technical standards.

    Cons

Poor budgeting (almost embarrassingly poor) leading to staff layoffs. Redundancy in I.T. - "One IT" is a myth. Some IT teams do not get along with other IT teams. Money is wasted on scores of consultants on large projects forcing smaller IT shops to severely cut back. Rather sad.. A LOT of favoritism too on staff that gets retained -- newer, more current folk are told "good bye!"

    Advice to Management

Encourage staff to retire that have been at UCB for 30+ years. Figure out your darned budget before you hire staff -- peoples lives get turned inside out because of poor upper mngt decisions.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1) can choose any courses from any departments, and the courses are generally well designed.
    2) a supporting environment for research

    Cons

    1) research outcome varies depending on which group you are in
    2) salary is not good considering the high house price of bay area
