Ensure the head GSI is doing everything possible to assist GSI.

I worked at University of California as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Interaction with students
    -no experience needed
-Flexible hours; works with your student schedule
-Program managers willing to work with you to solve problems; overall professional/lax atmosphere.

    Cons

-Some of the job activities can become repetitive. Eg some days you will be working 2-3 sections of students back-to-back doing the same learning activity.
-Overtime is frowned upon; once you reach your weekly hours limit, they will just stop booking you.

    Advice to Management

-When I was working, there seem to be two separate divisions that have their own on-site buildings. I wish things were more integrated between the two teams. However, they were also constructing a large central building at the time. So maybe now all instruction and management will take place there and the separation is no longer an issue.

    Pros

    Great career move. Pension

    Cons

Harsh politics. They layed me off, then fired the manager who recommended my dismissal. Couldn't they have investigated what happened?

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to office politics. Diffuse issues.

I have been working at University of California (More than a year)

    Pros

Exciting job managing the fixed income trading team. Management appreciates ideas, and ways to solve problems, and they listen and comment. Salary is very nice, could be better based on what I have brought to the table, which is a lot.

    Cons

My particular department is not part of the bonus pool. We are considered a group that has nothing to do with the investment process and are therefore ineligible for additional compensation, even if the annual performance appraisal is stellar....mine was.

    Advice to Management

Don't let contract employees hang on for too long. A contract position is NO job security and is a stress point that can easily be remedied. HIRE ME!
