    Pros

Teaching hospital provides the potential for learning as well as opportunity to teach or cinduct research. In theory. While this is true for most academic centers, if your department is chaired by a sociopath, the culture is directly affected and all the elements that drive one to accept scademic positions with below average salaries, are nullified.

    Cons

Again, university values are not adopted by some departments. Highly variable. My department wad very unethical , major Medicare fraud occurring. Also dangerous as the chief allowed all manner of things to be permitted which compromised patient care. Higher ups will champion your cause if you complain. However, daily life in your department will be hell. I could tell incredible stories you would scarcely believe. All said and done I sued and won 360,000 and an additional 120,000 in administrative pay while on leave for a year.

    Advice to Management

Know and care about the manner in which individual departments are led. You may then be aware to unethical practices before lives are lost and you are in litigation., such as the the famous liver transplant and fertility scandals the lesser known morgue scandal , for example

I worked at University of California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    They give really good benefits!

    Cons

They don't have any oversight to make sure academics are not forcing their employees to work overtime. I worked 70+ hours per week for years with no overtime pay, and was even forced to work 7 days a week for a couple months off the books. It was all illegal, but no one seemed to care.

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees get paid for their overtime!

    Pros

Hard-working nice colleagues. Interesting work sometimes.

    Cons

Many. Management has a culture of not praising its employees, but rather pointing out the flaws. And the managers that do support their staff, can get trampled on by their bosses. We pay $81per month for parking, yet most of us walk at least 4 blocks to our cars. HR in Health is the worst HR I have ever come across - they do not communicate with you, and will do nothing to help you in your quest for a raise. The only way to get a better pay is to move around the university... or leave.

    Advice to Management

You are stuck in the middle ages. Learn how to appreciate, support and follow those that have real vision and stop trying to subdue them.

I worked at University of California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

UCI has excellent benefits and great pay. There were many perks available to employees and there were opportunities to take advantage of work/life balance needs.

    Cons

The organizational structure is top-down with many departments operating in a very political environment. Employee morale often suffered due to policies that overlooked suggestions that may provide more efficiency.

    Advice to Management

Offer an open-door policy to employees where departments can work in functional teams toward possible solutions that will create a more proficient environment.
