I worked at University of California (Less than a year)

    Pros

The campus is beautiful and the staff is friendly. Really, with the amazing weather and intellectual atmosphere, the place is kind of a paradise.

    Cons

As a graduate student or a teaching assistant, you will be working long hours for low pay and very little thanks.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. All that UCI has done in recent years to encourage diversity is wonderful and necessary.

I worked at University of California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    They give really good benefits!

    Cons

They don't have any oversight to make sure academics are not forcing their employees to work overtime. I worked 70+ hours per week for years with no overtime pay, and was even forced to work 7 days a week for a couple months off the books. It was all illegal, but no one seemed to care.

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees get paid for their overtime!

I worked at University of California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

the students. A great group of people to get to know and work with

    Cons

Many of the tenured-faculty are entrenched and miserable people to interact with

    Advice to Management

Remove tenure system. Replace it with "5 or 6 year term hires and OUT" system like at the UN

I have been working at University of California (Less than a year)

    Pros

Can be fairly easy as times. With the right instructor and class, the work can be enjoyable and rewarding.

    Cons

Preferences and assignments are at the discretion of people in management without any direct experience. Working for incompetent lecturers can make you lose your mind.

    Advice to Management

It would help if lecturers (non-Senate faculty) would be evaluated more rigorously before being assigned teaching assignments and teaching assistants.

    Pros

Hard-working nice colleagues. Interesting work sometimes.

    Cons

Many. Management has a culture of not praising its employees, but rather pointing out the flaws. And the managers that do support their staff, can get trampled on by their bosses. We pay $81per month for parking, yet most of us walk at least 4 blocks to our cars. HR in Health is the worst HR I have ever come across - they do not communicate with you, and will do nothing to help you in your quest for a raise. The only way to get a better pay is to move around the university... or leave.

    Advice to Management

You are stuck in the middle ages. Learn how to appreciate, support and follow those that have real vision and stop trying to subdue them.
