I have been working at University of California (Less than a year)

    Pros

Can be fairly easy as times. With the right instructor and class, the work can be enjoyable and rewarding.

    Cons

Preferences and assignments are at the discretion of people in management without any direct experience. Working for incompetent lecturers can make you lose your mind.

    Advice to Management

It would help if lecturers (non-Senate faculty) would be evaluated more rigorously before being assigned teaching assignments and teaching assistants.

    Pros

the UC system has decent medical coverage for single individuals. My university has a good graduate student union and reliable teaching opportunities for graduate students (this may vary by department).

    Cons

Wages make living in Southern California somewhat difficult without roommates or without living on campus. On campus housing options are notoriously bad.

    Advice to Management

Implement more graduate student affordable housing. Partner with external companies, as the current administration for housing is not helpful or aware of student needs.

I worked at University of California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

UCI has excellent benefits and great pay. There were many perks available to employees and there were opportunities to take advantage of work/life balance needs.

    Cons

The organizational structure is top-down with many departments operating in a very political environment. Employee morale often suffered due to policies that overlooked suggestions that may provide more efficiency.

    Advice to Management

Offer an open-door policy to employees where departments can work in functional teams toward possible solutions that will create a more proficient environment.

I have been working at University of California (More than a year)

    Pros

Exciting job managing the fixed income trading team. Management appreciates ideas, and ways to solve problems, and they listen and comment. Salary is very nice, could be better based on what I have brought to the table, which is a lot.

    Cons

My particular department is not part of the bonus pool. We are considered a group that has nothing to do with the investment process and are therefore ineligible for additional compensation, even if the annual performance appraisal is stellar....mine was.

    Advice to Management

Don't let contract employees hang on for too long. A contract position is NO job security and is a stress point that can easily be remedied. HIRE ME!
