I worked at University of Cambridge full-time

    Pros

Great basic benefits for all staff (yearly pay rise, online discounts, access to some college grounds)
A very good pension scheme (USS) available for certain groups of staff
    Strong commitment to personal development
Beautiful city with lots of amenities

    Cons

Decision making is extremely slow as it is usually done through committees who feed into other committees.

Severe lack of management training. Many managers have been promoted to senior positions based on longevity or academic status (regardless of the nature of their role). Individuals in these positions are often governed by a different set of HR rules to the more junior staff and are almost 'untouchable', paving the way for mismanagement.

Fixed term contracts seem to be very common.

University departments are disparate and you will have a very different experience depending on where you work. Typically look for reviews in the area where you are going to be working and take the others with a pinch of salt.

    Advice to Management

Enforce management training on your staff, particularly those who insist that they do not need management training.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Multidisciplinary research environment, which makes it easy to collaborate or get research-related feedback. A lot of great researchers all around. Plenty of pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the region for collaboration on career progression.

    Cons

Very competitive environment in terms of long term job stability - candidates moving from outside of Cambridge area are favoured. Some level of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Restrict size of research groups in order to increase output per person rather than measuring in absolute terms. This would promote quality over quantity and should provide career benefits for human capital.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very independent work and self-defined. There is a huge variety of subjects to choose from. The university and colleges create a very stimulating environment for high class research.

    Cons

The housing market in Cambridge is very problematic leading to a steady increase of rents. Also the PhD stipend is quite low.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great facilities and networking opportunities and learning environment. The work done at the university is excellent in all fields. Very high standard. The collegiate system offers great opportunities to meet new people and you are sure to be looked after during the course of your studies.

    Cons

Also because of Cambridge being a collegiate university responsibilities for student problems get shifted between one's college, department and graduate school. If you're healthy and happy throughout your studies Cambridge is great. If problems arise they are not always the best to deal with it in an organised manner unless you make a fuss.

    Cons

career progression is slow. not many opportunities

    Advice to Management

to preserve the reputation of the university put a system in place to prevent and report scientific fraud (publications)

I worked at University of Cambridge full-time

    Pros

Very nice atmosphere, very nice people, nice locations, good food, possibility to attend events at the University. Word count, word count, word count.

    Cons

Extremely tedious bureaucratic work. No interest in changing what isn't broken, but that's not to say it works well. Cambridge University Administration is like a bicycle in the space age.

    Advice to Management

Having a comfortable environment with perfected humidity levels, chair heights, ergonomic keyboards, dust levels, variable desktop brightness etc. does not equate to a fulfilling working environment.
