I have been working at University of Delaware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Professional development offerings are abundant, the work environment is generally very good, and benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Positions are very dependent upon direct supervisor... be sure to seek information regarding salary support (e.g., hard v. soft money), classification status, and opportunities for career growth.

    Advice to Management

Established sr. management needs to be sure to actively manage times of disruptive transition; institutional knowledge is important, and represents a great inefficiency if staff are not well-informed of plans and timelines for installation of new leadership, and ultimately many of those employees will ID other opportunities.

I have been working at University of Delaware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UD offers excellent benefits to their graduate students.

    Cons

The bureaucracy can be difficult to navigate. Graduate students are often given limited vacation days and expected to work holidays for no extra pay.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be stronger administrative support for graduate students.

I worked at University of Delaware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

UD as a whole is fine - generous benefits and perks. Some departments are great because of great managers.

    Cons

Most managers are clueless - the Peter Principal is in full effect and HR avoids fixing things. The amount of red tape is ridiculous, and things often move at a snails pace on a good day.

    Advice to Management

Do not assume somebody who's good at a job would be good at managing people in that job. Make sure managers understand budgets, project management, and people management - too many clueless managers and nobody cares. This is why I left UD and haven't once regretted it.
