I have been working at University of Delaware

    Pros

Great working conditions, atmosphere, great benefits, especially 403-b and educational benefits.

    Cons

Administration is heavy handed, allowing little faculty governance. However, a new President is coming on board, so perhaps that will change.

I have been working at University of Delaware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are great benefits and Newark is a nice area, however, it's difficult to enjoy the perks of living in the area during the academic year.

    Cons

Unreasonable expectations, ridiculous taxes on classes that employees can take "for free," that eat up your entire paycheck, and etc.

I worked at University of Delaware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Although there was a recent increase in the cost of benefits, overall the university provides great benefits between health, education, and free use of the gym. The overall climate of the university is a friendly one, with many opportunities to take on responsibilities outside of your department and to connect with others.

    Cons

This could vary on department, but at times it seems there is very little transparency from the administration. One area of UD I am also not impressed with is how they handle diversity, specifically with various races. A lot more can be done from the administration to develop a more inclusive community for non-white students.

I have been working at University of Delaware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits Beautiful workplace Sincere commitment to professional development It is a university that is really trying to address the issues that is facing higher ed. There is a lot of funding in the student affairs and student services areas. it is a large institution and most people put students first.

    Cons

The pace and the workload is very high in student affairs. there is very little concern about work life balance and we are plagued by the new RBB responsibility based budgeting, and virtually no ability to give raises to people who are doing better work than others in their department. People stay in their jobs for a long time, so not a lot of upward movement for entry levels.

I have been working at University of Delaware part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits and community. The university has a beautiful campus and a great atmosphere. The full-time benefits package is fantastic, starting with a full month's worth of vacation days.

    Cons

When President Harker took over, he turned the school into a business. A lot of people lost their jobs with no reason given and the staff who were left still feel insecure about their positions.

  10. "UD is a great place to work."

    StarStarStarStarStar
Current Employee - Postdoctoral Researcher in Newark, DE

I have been working at University of Delaware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

UD has a beautiful campus and offers great benefits to postdocs (who are classified as staff), including a free staff gym, parking near campus buildings, tuition benefits, and employer contributions to retirement accounts.

    Cons

My only complaint is that I can't work here longer, since UD puts a 3 year limit on postdoc contracts. Also, Newark, DE is not a particularly exciting place to live!
