I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Pay in line with typical RA salary, generous if pre-PhD. - Good leave allowance (35 days + 4 public holidays). - Nice working environment (people/ institute) but very lab-dependent.

    Cons

General academia issues: - Short term contracts are the norm. - Working hours outside 9-6 mon-fri not officially required but can be unfairly expected by some supervisors. - Some career progression but becomes very difficult above a certain level. - Management can be bad

    Pros

Good flexibility in working patterns Good team environment

I have been working at University of Edinburgh for more than a year

    Pros

Lots going on, many opportunities, interesting environment, flexible working, well funded research projects, good support teams, low pressure.

    Cons

Short term contracts, low pay, slow academic processes, quality of support and direction varies massively with principal investigators, very much seen as a temporary/transitory role and hard to progress into an academic position.
