I worked at University of Essex as a contractor

    Pros

Very good practical work experience for PhD students.

Passionate colleagues who care greatly about pupils and create wonderful and engaging plans for their modules.

    Cons

Insecure contracts and low pay for the volume and pressure of work by highly qualified and hardworking people.

Would be good to see more subject-specific teacher training.

I worked at University of Essex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities to progress, good community feel and lots of facilities on site such as gym and nursery. The holidays are good too

    Cons

Not enough internal professional development opportunities in recent years. Perhaps too much pressure on some staff. The buildings are showing their age and need some big investment soon

    Advice to Management

Continue with ambitious growth targets but be aware of pressure on staff. IT department needs to be expanded as it often felt one step behind latest technology.

I worked at University of Essex as a contractor

    Pros

Many great, hard-working, innovative people to bounce ideas off and collaborate with.
Very friendly and supportive work environment within the department.
The majority of students want to do well and are willing to put in the time, effort and work needed to pass their courses.
Opportunities to attend lectures/seminars in other departments - great if you have other interests.

    Cons

Got strung out with contract after contract after contract - I was teaching there for over three years and must have had at least six contracts. Very unfair to keep staff hanging, sometimes into the final week of an existing contract.
Teaching foreign students whose language skills were not up to scratch - no fault of the students, but down to the ridiculously low English language requirements the University has in place.
Hard to raise concerns about cases of plagiarism as you end up creating a lot of work for yourself in the process.

    Advice to Management

Keep your ear to the ground - informal meetings with staff at all levels will open your eyes to some of the challenges faced with managing students' expectations with limited time and resources.

    Pros

    -Wonderful campus
-Fantastic team, many of whom have become very good friends
-Opportunity for your work to have a real impact
    -Supportive management
-Not a 'doff your cap' atmosphere. Not out of the ordinary to stop and chat with the Uni's senior management
    -Great development opportunities
-Jobs can be as varied as you want them to be
    -Given responsibility from the off
    -Ambitious plans for the future

    Cons

    -Limited room for progression
-Possible favoritism- questionable people being promoted without formal interviews being held
-If your opinion is not what they want to hear, you have to fight for it to be heard
-Plans are often implemented 'quickly', rather than 'well'
-Resentment between departments as some do seem to receive preferential treatment with regards to budget, influence, etc.
-Can sometimes be a 'blame culture', depending where you work
-Divide between academics and 'support staff'
-Ambitious expansion plans puts pressure on staff

    Advice to Management

Continue to put the students at the heart of what you do. Have no doubt you will succeed with regards to the strategic plan, but do wonder at what cost.

I worked at University of Essex as a contractor

    Pros

Friendly coworkers and congenial environment with respectful students. University of Essex is a good place to spend a couple years in.

Colchester is a 1 hour train ride away from London.

    Cons

Many additional responsibilities that are not mentioned in the contract were added on to the workload during the semester.

    Colchester is a small city.

    Advice to Management

The management would be far better if they were to reduce the number of students in classes.

Additional lecturers may be needed to reduce the workload on present lecturers.
