Very friendly culture; various challenging projects; nice professor

    Cons

would be better if provided more funding.

I worked at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Glasgow is lovely. Good access to countryside.
Pre restructure - I enjoyed working here. The workplace I joined had a great feeling of camaraderie.

    Cons

    This is my personal opinion:
    1. I had less and less time for research and ever greater teaching and teaching admin loads
    2. My yearly assessment only seemed to be about performance (papers/grant income/students supervised)- make sure you are aware of how you will be judged - look it up on the P&DR pages of HR. The emphasis on my development/promotion as an academic did not seem to exist
    3. I was hampered by a dysfunctional Institute/School structure. Infighting between university structures made life very difficult
    4. Poor administrative support in every respect
    5. In my opinion, women were treated poorly in my Institute.

    Advice to Management

How about taking heed of the staff survey

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time

    Pros

It's an okay place to work. It will always be around and never goes down.

    Cons

A lot of bureaucracy. Also suffers from the problem of contract extensions. Also poor salary relative to the industry.

    Advice to Management

If you want to retain talents, be prepared to offer them more money. Also keep them on a real permanent position.

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A comfortable city with plenty of amenities. The university has a great history and atmosphere. The research done here has good potential and the fabrication labs are fantastic.

    Cons

Weather is a bit dull. University facilities are old and need to upgraded to make the work environment more modern. Car access is problematic and salaries may not be competitive enough anymore.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries and quality of work facilities

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a university, and I am a research associate hired under a professor's grant. This professor happens to be great so my job is great.
    Learning tons on the job
    Great lab mates,
Fell like a valued member of the team

    Cons

Like most positions of this kind it is contingent on funding and so when the funding ends so does my job. This is likely the main reason I will leave academia for industry.

    Pros

Well-equipped for molecular biology related work.
    Sequencing facility is in-house.
Bioinformatics unit is well integrated into the institute.

    Cons

Remote location, not to many contacts with the main campus research groups.
    HSE mismanagement issues.
    Career track is unclear.

    Advice to Management

Resolve the issues regarding the HSE people, who cannot make decisions. Thus, lots of time goes to waste, which is very bad for the grants.

I have been working at University of Glasgow (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a nice place to work. Very good academic environment. No politics or tension among the teachers. Management is very nice and helpful.

    Cons

It's far away. It takes 2:30 hours for up and down. No staff quarters are available in university campus. A.C. Does not work in some areas.

    Advice to Management

All good. Just provide more time for research. Professors should not be given clerical works. University NAAC will improve only with research and not with clerical work.
