I worked at University of Glasgow (More than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly culture; various challenging projects; nice professor

    Cons

would be better if provided more funding.
For challenging courses, should provide TAs.

    Pros

Excellent, world-class and stimulating research environment.

Good facilities and excellent support and guidance from from the research management (although this can be somewhat group dependent - maybe I was lucky).

Typically limited duration contracts, but good once you get on the rolling grants - in my experience, if you're any good, the management will do amazing feats of juggling to keep you regardless of funding problems.

    Cons

Limited chance of career advancement in research-only - as normal, to advance, you need to teach and the term time load can be rather high (supervision and not much else) - although some opportunities do exist.

    Advice to Management

In general, good job! Keep a eye on the teaching time load to ensure the university can keep its world-class research status. More opportunities for research-only posts (and advancement there) would be welcome (although noted that teaching is the primary function of universities!)

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Availability of hi-tech devices for research. Leading researchers in life science are available to share knowledge and experience right next door. The architecture of the building as an open plan research lab allows easy communication between lab groups and fellow PhD students.

    Cons

Work/life balance is very hard to attain. We are expected to work long hours and often work weekends. It is very hard for people that have children.

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've experienced great leadership at College and School level. As someone with a new young family, I feel very supported and accommodated.

    Cons

It is a large institution which has its own challenges however senior management and leadership structures within the Colleges and Schools appear to work hard to minimise these.

    Advice to Management

Continue to support those employees who require flexibility around working arrangements while their families are young. When decisions are made that affect staff be sure to communicate the outcome in a timely fashion.

I have been working at University of Glasgow part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The team was very supportive, I learnt a lot of new things but most importantly I got to develop my network. It also gave me an opportunity to add something extra to my CV which I am very happy about as I am still a student.

    Cons

Sometimes it was hard to know what to do, and felt like perhaps I wasn't doing enough.
Due to communication issues cross-teams we had our website moved without prior notice which cause a bit of a fuss.

    Advice to Management

Have better communication between levels. Due to that we had several issues with out website being moved. Have team meeting on a regular basis, not as an optional thing.
