I worked at University of Guelph full-time

    Pros

The University of Guelph encourages transformation and is an inspiring place to work. Surrounded by Deans who live and breathe "next level", the students are encouraged to reach beyond their usual scope to achieve a higher potential on every level. It is a special place with terrific staff who support each other and the students to Be More.

    Cons

At the end of the day, this is still a university - an institutional environment with policies and procedures that are rooted in tradition and tough, in some departments, to live outside the box. The reinforcement of the protocol in some departments impacts their agility and hinders the ability to move forward and achieve true "transformation". Rather, new managers sometimes discourage stepping out of bounds, in favour of maintaining the traditional status quo. This environment is absolute perfection for some folks, it was unfortunately a "con" for me.

    Advice to Management

To be fair, I left prior to the existing president and am not in a position to make an assessment of the current environment. This review is based on my past experience, which helped shape career decisions and direction for me as an individual.

  10. "Laboratory Services Division - Laboratory work conditions & culture are horrible and there is little room for growth"

I have been working at University of Guelph full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Pay is adequate
    - Different union representations
    - Work conditions are adequate

    Cons

    - Middle management is out of touch with the workload and what subordinates are actually doing
    - Entry-level positions are sometimes difficult to attain (from an outside perspective)
    - Little room for growth (unless you are well-liked by management)
    - Workload is not equal
    - See advice to management

    Advice to Management

    - Review job fact sheets and compensate for work done. GLP vs the rest of CHEM.
    - Ensure workload is equally distributed - GLP and CHEM are not even close.
    - Get frequent training - Human Relations skills needs serious improvement.
    - Ensure work culture is improved - toxic environment lead by toxic supervisors
    - Actually listen to EHS problems and don't be cheap with respect to upgrading facilities - don't argue that it is safe and allow employees to view findings.
    - Minimize turnover as it frustrating to train new people all the time.
    - Treat employees with respect and not as children.
