I have been working at University of Helsinki full-time

    Pros

Good facilities and equipment. Science is good, in some areas very good. Fairly helpful staff. Decent benefits. A good work-life balance is encouraged.

    Cons

It is very difficult to obtain funding.
Salary in postdoctoral positions is low and contracts usually short-termed, which means many of the brightest students leave academia after their PhD.
Quality of teaching could be higher.
Doctoral studies can take very long.
Some campuses (Viikki) are in the middle of nowhere, going back to individual's.

    Advice to Management

Promote higher standards in teaching. Do more to ensure that doctoral students can graduate faster. Offer better conditions (more pay, longer contracts) for postdocs.

I have been working at University of Helsinki full-time

    Pros

    - modern working environment
    - University in general organizes lots of social events

    Cons

    - concerning my group in the Department of Geography and Geosciences: arrogant professor who is just caring about the number of publications but not about what his students think or feel; the majority of my local colleagues is closed and cold (colleagues from other countries are more open); bad working atmosphere with no passion or life!

    - concerning whole university and location: crappy food, extremely high living costs, crappy climate (but okay, this is Finland)
