I worked at University of Houston System part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working as a shelver was easy going. I think it was a good opportunity to learn about the day-to-day functions and processes of an academic library. You can listen to music on earphones while you shelve, as long as you are present and doing your duties, which include shelving books, shifting, and shelf-reading according to the Library of Congress Classification.

If you are a woman of color, it is, unfortunately, a very pale and male workplace. Be prepared for microaggressions, feeling talked down to, and just being relegated to menial tasks for menial pay. $8.50 hr/ with a max of twenty hours as a student worker is not okay. Even though the job is generally relaxed, sometimes tasks involving lifting furniture or shelves and it can be straining. There is also a lot of dust in the stacks.
