I worked at University of Illinois as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours were very flexible. As long as you worked 20 hours a week and you got your work done, they didn't care when you went in. It was very easy to get along with fellow researchers.

    Cons

You had to be responsible for your work for the most part. The people would be willing to help, but everyone is so busy that they might not have the time.

    Advice to Management

It would have been nice if there was more written goals for everyone. There were so many different jobs happening that it was pretty hectic in the office.

I worked at University of Illinois as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

I learned a lot during my first year of working here. I had lots of fellow employees and some large-scale projects to work on.

    Cons

Usually it was pretty slow-paced and repetitive. After my first year, things slowed down too much for me and I was ready to move on. There was not a lot of room for creativity, because they often requested the same things over and over.

    Advice to Management

There was usually a good amount of work to be done, but all of the work was so similar, so it easily became boring. It is important to keep the interns engaged and challenged. A positive attitude and influence is vital to encourage interns.

I worked at University of Illinois part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tutored a variety of students on a variety of assignments. Good instruction. Best to set expectations with students before beginning a session.

    Cons

Students would expect you to "fix" their papers, when the role was really for tutoring and criticism.

    Advice to Management

Make the expectations clearer to students coming into the Writing Center about what they can get out of a tutoring session.
