I have been working at University of Illinois at Chicago full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

At least you can find yourself around -- a diverse set of -- people who are doing interesting work or are passionate about their field of expertise.

    Cons

Employees / graduate students are basically disposable labor, and the laboratory support staff are often treated poorly and undercompensated as well. Depending on where you work it can be a bureaucratic, messy, and precarious nightmare that your better off avoiding in the first place, especially so for TAs and RAs that are international students.
