I have been working at University of Illinois at Chicago as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Once you're in, you're in. My office is like a little family.

    Cons

HR is a mess. Things take forever and the hiring managers do not know any of the skills needed for so many positions under VCAS. It's necessary to have your HR contact in office fight for you with salaries/position titles.

    Advice to Management

Learn at least what basic programming skills are so when people tell you they are an expert in AutoCAD or GIS you have an idea what they're talk about.

I have been working at University of Illinois at Chicago full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work and has great benefits. For example employees have access to a tuition waiver to attend classes. Understanding institution to work for depending on what unit you are employed with.

    Cons

With the Illinois state budget in chaos sometimes it is a bit unnerving being employed by a state institution. Also, there is not a lot of room for growth.

    Advice to Management

Provide other opportunities to keep employees engaged for the lack of growth and salary increases such as more professional training opportunities, and conferences. Allow for more flexible schedules.
