I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great! That's where it ends.

    Cons

There is NO room for advancement. RNs tend to treat you poorly. There is no support from management. It's a do your job and shut up atmosphere. I have worked in 3 different areas over 12 years and it's all the same. Resident physicians can be rough to work for, as they feel they have to exude authority when they have no clue what they are doing. I personally have saved several from law suit type mistakes. Faculty physicians tend to be great.

    Advice to Management

We need an atmosphere of inclusion and appreciation, instead of fear and worthlessness.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great medical insurance, dental and retirement is unmatched by many other employers nationally.

    Cons

Good benefits causes lazy employees. Lots of people working there just for the benefits. Can be hard to advance. Old hospital area leaves a lot to be desired. Some management seems incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Reward those that do a great job and work hard. Hold those accountable that don't pull their weight. Offer more educational opportunites.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time

    Pros

Some of the physicians and staff are absolutely top-notch.

    Cons

Many, many mediocre employees not suited by education, experience, or intelligence to be in the positions that they were hired into. Many talented faculty and staff have left, and the organization is struggling to attract new talent. New and very expensive Children's Hospital was built in lieu of addressing many adult inpatient and outpatient areas that badly needed upgrading. Fiscally irresponsible decisions made often.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. There are a great many managers that are inept and completely out-of-touch with the staff they manage. Even worse, middle and upper management is making decisions that adversely impact faculty and staff due to a lack of understanding the department, clinic, administrative unit, etc.
