Difficulty with management when trying to help each family or patient in a different way--Each pt or family is different, and so "scripting" does not always work

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, long-term employment, and decent working condition

    Cons

Inconsistent workload, lots of management changes, unengaged supervisors and employees generally do the bare minimum to keep their job

    Advice to Management

Be more engaged with employees and look more at people's work and less about their tenure.

    Pros

The pros of working at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital are the team work and coworkers, and pay.

    Cons

The cons with working at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital are the fact that we have to pay for parking and ride a bus in, there is not retention plan to keep nurses there longer.

    Advice to Management

Fix parking issues, free parking, need retention plans

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Super flexible scheduling around class times and other prior engagements. Mostly computer work but you still learn a lot about how the hospital works. My office was a blast to work in. Great supervisor and coworkers.

    Cons

You must be a student at UIHC. I think that we are looked down upon and sometimes treated rudely because we are student employees and not full time clerks.

    Advice to Management

Better communication would help with our efficiency and also with resolving any problems they have with us. Sometimes our expectations are unclear and this causes tension.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time

    Pros

The benefits are fantastic and there is a sense of community. Research is a huge priority here. They have faculty and providers from all over the world and country.

    Cons

Getting to and from the hospital takes a long time despite Iowa City being relatively small. Parking is horrendous. They are constantly adding on to the current building so space becomes more and more limited.

    Advice to Management

To my department, but I'm sure it could be translated to other departments, I'd say listen more to the people below you. If there is a problem, they're often the first to notice. Management needs to facilitate more than dictate.
