I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Complex, interesting cases that you won't do at any hospital in a 350 mile radius.

    Cons

The state government took away our AMAZING health insurance. We also don't get raises anymore whereas before we got 4.5% every year until you capped out. They also only seem to be interested in keeping nurses happy which is great, if you're a nurse. If you're not then you basically get crapped on. This used to be a dream job with the benefits and raises and now it's just another place. You're better off working in private practice than at this teaching institution.

    Advice to Management

Shift the focus to keeping all of your employees happy. Not just nurses. Stop throwing gobs of money at just them. Literally every employee that's not a nurse hates you for this. Also, give us a raise. Completely cutting off our raises has seriously impacted morale in a very negative way overall.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Cutting edge tech, nationally ranked (some departments)

    Cons

No raises for Merit union staff members who are already below market pay, unhappy work environment, parking is inconvenient and expensive, little to no beds for new patients - over crowding which impacts patient care, advancement opportunities are limited.

    Advice to Management

Stop wasting tax payers money on public perceptions (logos on water towers, etc.) and work on keeping your productive staff members happy which will in turn help provide better health care.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Patient care, college town, good benefits

    Cons

Limited opportunities to make a difference for many, replacing higher salaried employees with lower salaries. Small employment market with limited alternatives.

    Advice to Management

Lack of accountability, manifested as short term and self serving decisions without gathering facts or fully evaluating implications. Morale is at low point with many looking to leave or hoping to wait it out.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great fringe benefits and some outstanding faculty and staff.

    Cons

Lots of incompetent management at every level of the organization, especially at the top tier. Many mediocre employees who are there for the benefits.

    Advice to Management

This organization needs a top-down overhaul of some of its most senior level leadership before there is any real hope of organizational alignment with its values. This is not a patient-centered healthcare enterprise, and that's a huge problem.

    Pros

The people who work alongside and above you have all been fantastic and supportive.
    Superb benefits.

    Cons

The University is getting their budget cut, so raises are not as good as they used to be.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, and continue to support the staff.
