I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Patient care, college town, good benefits

    Cons

Limited opportunities to make a difference for many, replacing higher salaried employees with lower salaries. Small employment market with limited alternatives.

    Advice to Management

Lack of accountability, manifested as short term and self serving decisions without gathering facts or fully evaluating implications. Morale is at low point with many looking to leave or hoping to wait it out.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great fringe benefits and some outstanding faculty and staff.

    Cons

Lots of incompetent management at every level of the organization, especially at the top tier. Many mediocre employees who are there for the benefits.

    Advice to Management

This organization needs a top-down overhaul of some of its most senior level leadership before there is any real hope of organizational alignment with its values. This is not a patient-centered healthcare enterprise, and that's a huge problem.

    Pros

    Great work environment.
The people who work alongside and above you have all been fantastic and supportive.
    Superb benefits.

    Cons

The University is getting their budget cut, so raises are not as good as they used to be.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, and continue to support the staff.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits. Nice work facility.

    Cons

Atrocious leadership. Below-market pay. Advancement/opportunities based on favoritism, not merit.

    Advice to Management

When absorbing another company, perhaps try not to let your personal vendetta with C-level leadership be taken out on frontline staff who have just been put through the wringer with three major go-lives in the span of less than half a year.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great diverse group of people, benefits were really great. Vacation policy was very generous, job duties were clearly outlined and expectations were clear. Pay was good.

    Cons

Too many levels of management, most without many answers to questions. I worked in the food department for the patients, and the food wasn't good quality, so I felt bad sending it to patients.

    Advice to Management

Improve the food quality served to patients. Treat people like people, not numbers. Understand that even bottom-level employees have things going on outside work and give them some slack once in a while.

    Pros

Excellent place to work. Great co-workers and work environment. Benefits are great.

    Cons

I commuted so the drive plus work shift was 13 - 15 hours.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, decent pay, and excellent leave policies if you wind up working under a good manager

    Cons

This is an organization that has a lot of layers, but does not do a good job of retaining talent or identifying poor management and intervening. I have personally watched a lot of retaliation and poor management performance fester and lead to employee exits that could have easily been avoided by proper follow-up from HR or higher levels of leadership.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people like human beings, not robots. Don't use politics to target employees that are simply asking questions and looking for transparency in decision-making.
