I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some very professional people work here and I love to work with them. I've learned a lot about the field I'm interested in pursuing and honed my craft.

    Cons

Very very poor management. Hires unit supes for two units at a time. Our unit is frequently unsupervised. Patient acuity is high but we are still given status of "acute" care and not intensive. Staffing is frequently messy and we have a full unit almost always (management gets away with this by stating there is 'no ratio'). Our pediatric unit is currently not included in the children's hospital; no improvements has been made to our unit, either. It's really quite sad, as there are some staff who really want to create a therapeutic environment. Staff who are ineffectual and reported often are allowed to stay on, with the potential for retaliation against those who report issues.
There is very low shift differential for NAs, even though we are expected to work rotating schedules and weekends.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers who want the job, and screen better for defective staff in the interviewing process.

    Pros

The people are great to work with, but facilities need updated. The benefits are great, as well.

The pay isn't very great and we are frequently short on staff.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time

    Pros

There are some very dedicated, caring staff on the team.

    Cons

The construction of the new, multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art children's hospital at the UIHC did not include any renovations or improvements to the child psychiatric unit. They were understaffed and unprepared for the number of patients they housed, and often did not have resources or room for more challenging patients.

    Advice to Management

Stricter hiring policy, better communication with staff, better familiarity with patients, advocate for staff, seek funding for unit.

    Cons

Parking is off campus, have to take a bus in.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits. Good time off. Lots of different career choices all within one area. Great ability to grow in your career.

    Cons

Hard to get in. The time from application to interview/hire is way too long. Many great people are lost simply because they take jobs at places that do not take as long through the process. Not uncommon to have a couple months pass in the whole application/interview/hire process.

    Advice to Management

I had great management that allowed me to grow and flourish. Not all places within the hospital are like this. Managers need to understand that your workers are people and sometimes life happens. Maybe find out if something is going wrong first you can help your employee with before assuming they are a bad employee.

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great. 100% healthcare coverage, flex spending account, 3+ weeks of vacation every year. Depending on your department, some flexibility to work at home.

    Cons

Administration takes very little into consideration. Takes forever for new programs and staff to be approved. HR always slow, not always responsive.

    Advice to Management

Don't just listen to your employees, take action when an issue continues to occur.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Co-Workers are willing to help and are very understanding. The managers actually do their job and they lead by doing. The job is never boring because their is always something to do.

    Cons

The hours. 10 hour shifts are brutal if you are not used to them. For the job that you have to do it is a bit underpaid.
