I worked at University of Kent full-time

    Pros

Fair terms of work, considerate and helpful HR departments. Great campus and lots of useful additional benefits if you make use of them. A good, vibrant place to work.

    Cons

Perhaps a tendency to be lost within a large organisational structure and sometimes ideas, concerns could be more usefully addressed.

    Advice to Management

Could be more actively involved with all levels and needs of staff.

I have been working at University of Kent full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - PhD scholarships for European and UK students
    - School for Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research offers an excellent and friendly working environment
    - Flat hierarchies
    - Competent and enthusiastic academic and administrative staff in SSPSSR

    Cons

    - Not enough funding and encouragement for research visits
    - Conflict between qualitative and quantitative research seems made up and arbitrary
    - Too much pressure on PhD students to publish papers, teach and submit their thesis within 3 years

    Advice to Management

Instead of putting more pressure on students, the school should try to help students maintain a healthy work life balance and should also try to make 4 years the norm for a PhD rather than 3 years.

I worked at University of Kent part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Helpful and friendly colleagues with strong support networks and relaxed working environment
Lots of useful facilities and services available on campus and within walking distance

    Cons

Slow and often boring work culture with mediocre benefits
Too much emphasis on what students want and not what they should be learning and why etc.

    Advice to Management

Cheer up! There are much worse jobs in the world and too many self-absorbed egos floating about ruining the experience and excessively worrying.

    Pros

It locates in a beautiful campus and a traditional nice small town with full of cultures. It is enjoyable to work.

    Cons

The cons are also due to a nice small town. It feels different to those in a big city. Not bad.
