I have been working at University of Manchester full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Qaulity of resources and the University itself is very good.

    Cons

Some academics can be really arrogant, dismissive and condescending toward students, who after all are students for a reason.

I have been working at University of Manchester for more than a year

    Pros

Freedom of pursuing own research goals

    Cons

Academics are not controlled and students/work are often left without guidance/attention. Too much freedom means many people lose value for money work experience, General nonchalant atmosphere in institution which means things often are done later or never. No benefits apart from pension

I worked at University of Manchester full-time

    Pros

Staff benefits, access to facilities , childcare, mat leave policy, flexible/family working probably the best you can get in the country.

    Cons

There is a 'two tier' employee system where academics are tier 1 and everyone else is tier 2. Even work contracts are more favourable for academics, if you are not an academic you are classified as a 'non-academic' which sort of says it all really. Professional 'support' staff will do much of the behind the scenes work but there has to be an 'academic lead' for pretty much everything, so you will have no authority- you can find yourself doing all the work but the academics will take the credit (and higher salary and title e.g they will be called 'director of something' and contribute a few hours a week- you will be full time and be the main point of contact,.. but be the 'officer' /project manager etc..when in reality you are the one doing all the directing - I saw this multiple times across many groups and disciplines )- if you are on the 'non-academic' side and you can put up with this fact- its a good place to work . (Also forget getting to any very senior levels- that's overwhelmingly reserved only for academics too)
