I worked at University of Maryland Eastern Shore full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Because UMES is part of the University of Maryland System, they have great benefits, including tuition remission at other UMS schools. It's also a lovely campus. They have an excellent mission.

    Cons

Leadership roles stay open for long periods of time before they are filled by people who would never be considered at comparable schools. Low achievement is not only accepted but encouraged. Generally, the atmosphere is chaotic and disorganization is the norm and not the exception.

    Pros

Free training for technology software and policies/procedures. A lot of students are great to work - eager to learn. The foreign students and the first generation college/American students are especially terrific, many of them and their families have sacrificed a lot for the students to receive a good education.

    Cons

Administration does not recognize the contributions of part-time staff and adjunct faculty and, given how much the Univeristy System of MD rely on us so they don't have to pay benefits (i.e., insurance, retirement, etc.) you'd think they would jump up and down to ensure we are getting all the support we deserve to do the job they don't want to pay for.. One adjunct makes $2200.00 per 3 credit course with a cap of 9 credit hours (3 courses) we can teach each semester = $6600.00 per semester with no benefits. A full-time lecturer would make $16,000.00 that same semester teaching only 12 credit hours and we both have to keep student confer hours. The only good point is adjuncts don't have to attend all the meetings the full time does, but most of us do anyway...

    Advice to Management

Some adjuncts have worked there more than 5 years, even 15 years, and are not recognized for awards, promotions, etc. We have to recommend ourselves for a measly Adjunct II bump and scratch to get it, SO, advice to you is to start really appreciating your adjuncts and part-timers.

    Pros

This job provides me an opportunity to engage, encourage, and influence young adults in their pursuit of life changing career opportunities.

    Cons

There are never enough resources to provide my students all the opportunities they deserve.

    Advice to Management

We need to develop more partnerships with industry leaders to enhance our students employment opportunities.

I worked at University of Maryland Eastern Shore part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a great place to start for people who have little to no experience. Conducive environment for growth and learning.

    Cons

Only thing I can think of is its location, it's located in a rural area, so if you're the type who enjoys city living, it's not a place for yoj

I have been working at University of Maryland Eastern Shore full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

UMES has a great mission, which makes the hard work worth it. Slower pace of life on the Eastern Shore shows, where people appreciate hard work and it is easy to form good relationships with co-workers and students.

    Cons

Some areas have 'legacy' employees that may not put in the effort that others do. However, that is probably an issue with every institution.

    Cons

The tutoring center should receive more funding.
