I have been working at University of Maryland part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of freedom in my schedule.

    Cons

Not really sure where I stand in long-term plan for research advisor. Have to secure funding on on regular basis, and if one gets that funding or not is based largely on things out of the control of the graduate student.

    Advice to Management

Work harder to define the rights of graduate students as employees at your university.

I have been working at University of Maryland as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Being able to work alongside faculty, administers, financiers, alumni, students, and all manner of other kinds of people has been truly eye-opening. Adapting to the different needs and preferences of such a diverse clientele is continuously educational. Working on behalf of an institution worth investing in and a community worth investing in has been rewarding.

    Cons

The variety of kinds of people you will be working with is a gift and a curse. Very little protocol is received positively across all groups. There are many difficulties when working with students, too. All computerized systems are severely outdated.

    Advice to Management

Update some of the software being used to uphold infrastructure.

    Pros

Great people, great benefits and I have my own office.

    Cons

Haven’t had a raise in a long time. Living expenses have gone up. Student loan payments have spiked and there’s been no cost of living adjustment. Let alone merit raises.

    Advice to Management

To the president and the provost: you’ve lost me because I can’t afford to live here and it’s impossible to commute here.
