I have been working at University of Maryland School of Medicine full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong scientific environment, relatively good compensation, excellent benefits.

    Cons

Seemingly single-minded focus on NIH grants... but hey, this is academic medicine. The same focus holds true in essentially every academic medical institution.

    Advice to Management

Reward other elements of scholarship beyond NIH-funded research, namely teaching and research funded by non-federal entities.

I have been working at University of Maryland School of Medicine full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The job is pretty laid back and you are not micromanaged.

    Cons

There is no room for growth except for a different position and no salary increase yearly(that you can see)

I have been working at University of Maryland School of Medicine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people here are great and the research is top quality. Collaboration is easy if you look for it. Student social hours happen most fridays and there is generally not a cutthroat attitude amongst graduate students.

    Cons

Schools are often stuck in silos so it can be difficult to meet people outside of your program. The city of Baltimore itself is great to me but can be difficult for some people. Higher administration tends to be very bureaucratic due to it being a state school.

    Pros

Working with people who are striving to do good, find cures for diseases and heal people can be very rewarding. The work is very interesting.

    Cons

Management can be very difficult, salaries are stagnant and salary inequity is rampant.

    Advice to Management

This workplace could be improved with some management training and more equitable salaries.
