    Pros

Benefits would probably be the best reason to work at UM. Not only do you get good medical, dental, retirement, etc... but you also have the ability to take advantage of tuition remission and pursue furthering your education. The extensive variation on job possibilities is also excellent. Whether you hope to work as a professor, doctor, researcher, or janitor, UM is a great place to work.

    Cons

Salaries aren't particularly high for many lower-level positions. Living in Miami is absolutely amazing for those who thrive in a metropolitan environment and utterly suffocating for those who don't. The campus is located in Coral Gables, which is a particularly nice, affluent area within the greater Miami area.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the level of professionalism and quality, but also be more available to people.

    Pros

There are many opprtunies for lateral and promotional advancement. Great and beautiful area. Depending on the department casual Fridays are a bonus as well as paid vacation, sick days and holidays. Has some great family incentives like Marlin's games and picnics. Employees tend to be very friendly becoming like family.
The University also has a wonderful community outreach program and there are many opportunities for volunteering.

    Cons

Hurricanes (the weather) and being such a large corporation with numerous departments interdepartmental communication be time consuming or confusing. The language barrier can be an issue if you are not bilingual and sometimes you feel excluded from conversations that you cannot be a part of.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

    Pros

The benefits of vacation, sick leave, holidays and being paid when you are not able to go to work because of hurricanes or state of emergencies. Being able to attend athletic events at a reduced rate is also a great benefit and it allows you to spend your off duty time with your family at a great sporting event. If you take advantage of the educational benefits that are provided the sky is the limit.

    Cons

The only downside that I can think of is the limited free parking. It is best to just pay for a parking permit which is somewhat expensive.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on the morale of your employees as you have been, it makes UM a great place to work.

    Pros

Excellent workplace, plenty of support for advancement, beautiful campus. The salary is competitive and benefits are good as well. Also Miami is a great city to live.

    Cons

City is a bit expensive, opportunities to collaborate are limited. Graduate student level needs to be elevated, a task which is very difficult. It is hard to find help for high level research.

    Advice to Management

The management is doing a good job, which shows in the results achieved in the last few years. Incentives for new active junior and senior hires should be generated, once the economy picks up.

    Pros

*Great Stipend (`30K/yr if you get an RA over the summer and take extra assignments over the semester)
    *Insurance reduction for Grads
    *Great professors and research opportunities
*In general, work/study balance is very flexible
    *Awesome Graduate Student Association

    Cons

*Qualifier Exam is difficult - if you don't pass both opportunities, bad news, so study study study!
*The labs that we teach are well organized, but there is no training for new grads resulting in a large amount of variation in difficulty/quality for the undergraduates taking the course.

    Advice to Management

I don't agree with a lot of her personal politics, but Shalala is doing an excellent job improving UM.

    Pros

Good research environment with access to all current technologies.

    Cons

Too much red tape within the University

    Advice to Management

Make things easier on the researchers bringing in much of the money regarding form and paper pushing.

I worked at University of Miami full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

UM provides employees with excellent benefits, including tuition remission, which is an amazing benefit, considering the cost of tuition at this private university. Other benefits, such as medical/dental, vacation, sick time, etc., are comparable to those that most large corporations offer. There are many opportunities for advancement at the "U" and it's a great environment in which to work. The main, Coral Gables campus is beautiful and vibrant. Cultural events abound, and something interesting is always going on.

    Cons

Parking...even employee permits are pricey and it's always a challenge to park. If you can work it out, take the Metrorail (public transportation). There's a station right at the main Coral Gables campus.

    Advice to Management

President Shalala has really propelled this university forward. As with any company or organization, some departments are better than others.
