I worked at University of Michigan part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

All the program managers and staff are incredibly supportive
It's great to know that you're doing work that really matters

    Cons

The nature of work changes frequently, based on the needs of the office so if you're not flexible, this office might not be a good fit

  4. "Great if you're a student. They will work with your schedule"

    Pros

Works with your schedule as the semesters change. There's and added benefit of working in campus so you don't have to drive out.

    Cons

Pay is okay, not exceptional. It works for a college student who doesn't have massive bills and pays for a shared room.

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

University of Michigan offers me very nice and comprehensive benefit package. Access to lots of on-campus activities and events.

    Cons

The university is a non-profit institution so the salary it can offer may not be comparable to that of a equal position in industry.

    Advice to Management

University may offer more after-graduation program to its employees these may attract more potential applications.

I have been working at University of Michigan part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Flexibility in scheduling and work
    401k benefits

    Cons

    Low pay
    Poor management
Work can be extremely repetitive and focused on paperwork than actual "work"

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more transparency in management. Management can be catty and very toxic depending on who the direct supervisor is. There are no helpful ways to go to HR anonymously to file complaints.

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to gain new expertise and experience the multiple phases/processes of conducting research. Had the opportunity to work with several PIs in different social science labs.

    Cons

Sometimes PIs don't have enough time to mentor student researchers. Lots of time spent teaching yourself how to conduct analysis, conduct literature review and prepare manuscripts.

    Advice to Management

Establish a minimum wage for your graduate research assistants.
